“Sunny Ways” quipped Justin Trudeau back in 2015, referencing his predecessor Wilfred Laurier. Trudeau may not be “the great conciliator” (as Laurier was known), but it is his hypocrisy on the subject of meaningful climate action where the Winnipeg based tune-smith and “Lunar Lad of History” jonny moonbeam takes issue. So, it is with his catchy 3-chord anthem “Sunny Ways” that moonbeam polishes off and drags the protest anthem into the 21st Century. The song has a chorus that will rattle on in your head much longer than any political slogan and features delightful musical flourishes from Sheepdogs-inspired electric guitar, mandolin, trumpet and string section - underpinned by a good old steady acoustic campfire strum. It’s a song with a hook and a message, and a uniquely Canadian one at that.

Bombastic and mocking - much like the man the song is about - “King in the Making” is the debut track from Winnipeg-based, lunar lad, jonny moonbeam. It is 21st century protest music, slickly produced and timely of message. Blending political commentary and power-pop sensibility, moonbeam calls back to the classic Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Emperor’s New clothes” as an unfortunate allegory for today’s so-called “leader of the free world.” A frantic and intricate drum pattern underpins an annoyingly-catchy ear worm of a chorus, while verses engage in clever word play and even the occasional Nitche quote thrown in (“Cuz Evil men ya know, got no songs!”). Like the little kid in the story, moonbeam is not afraid to call out the moral bankruptcy of the “King in the Making,” and you’ll probably sing along.
