Springtime in the Alley
I have had this song rattling around since last spring, when I had the humbling honour of going on patrol with the Winnipeg chapter of the Bear Clan. What an incredible and welcoming group (in case YOU want to volunteer or donate —> https://www.bearclanpatrolinc.com/).
In 3 hours and 3 back alleys that night, we recovered 171 used needles.
171.
In 1 night.
9 square blocks.
In many other cities, safe injection sites have been set up. Besides preventing countless deaths, they help keep these dangerous used needles off the streets; streets where families and children live.
Brian Pallister is dead set against safe injection sites.
Don’t you think a true leader would listen to the voices of national health organizations, addictions support workers and other frontline responders like the Bear Clan (all of whom advocate for such a site in Winnipeg)?
And this doesn’t even mention the cuts and damage Mr. Pallister has wrecked upon the rest of Manitoba’s health care.
There’s an election right around the corner folks. But… I bet he’ll be in Costa Rica by then.
I give you Springtime in the Alley.
