On the road again...

It’s been a long pandemic.  If you had told me that the St. Patricks Day show in March 2020 was the last time I would so freely share air droplets and beers with so many… well, I don’t think any of us could have really imagined what was in store.

I spent those early months chopping wood and writing songs in the woods. Lucky me, I know!  But I did manage to record two or three albums worth of material and played the odd online show.

But it wasn’t until this last week when I dipped my toe back into the proverbial waters that I felt like a “real” musician again.  The water was very fine.

I had the honour of headlining a show for the Calgary Folk Clubs' 50th season.  I knew this was a big deal, so I called in some not-so-secret weapons for the task.  Sol James and I go way back and Daniel Peloquin-Hopfner has been my musical wingman for most of my touring career.  They were (are) total pros, wading through my intricate and ornate arrangements and somehow figuring out how to make them work as a three-piece.  With the help of my left and right feet on the bass and snare drums - suddenly, we had a band.

Playing at DanLyn Studios in Edmonton, AB (March 5, 2022)

I will admit to some real nerves, but something about that 14-hour drive across the prairies, and being reminded that I have stopped at every one of those gas stations reminded me that this is what I do.  And we did it pretty well I think.

We packed up early and got to Danyn Studios the next day to see some very good friends, who hosted our second performance in their incredible studio space.  I have so many connections from touring over the years and no friends are finer than Dan and Connie.  We were all riding a wave of gratitude when we hit the stage and I think it was one of the best shows I've ever played.

We stayed around to hang out and catch up for a few days before we drove down to Rocky Mtn House and spent three days visiting yet more dear friends.

The fresh mountain air and the feeling of possibility are everywhere and I can't wait to share some new music with you this year.

Thanks for reading and listening, and hope to play for you in person soon,

moonbeam
